Today’s article will be a little different as we will speak about safety tips for children at Carnival.

While playing mas:

  • Keep the little hydrated with lots of water and ice.
  • Make sure they have comfortable shoes and socks. Powder socks with minimize bruising the skin.
  • Have emergency contacts including telephone numbers pinned securely on their clothes.
  • Teach them to stay on one place if you get separated as by running around looking for you, they can wander even further.
  • If they lose you, let them scream YOUR NAME as loudly as possible because there will be many “Mommies” and “Daddies” around.
  • Adults…put away your cell ‘phones and concentrate on the kiddies. When you are trying to hear what is being said over the din of the music…in that unguarded moment the children can wander off.

While camping:

  • Give them little chores to do such as setting up the chairs and the sleeping beds.
  • Make sure you have enough hand sanitizer and wipes.
  • Pack for rain, it make be sunny one moment and strong the next.
  • Instill “camp courtesy”
    • No running through other persons camping area.
    • Be quiet early morning, because not everyone wakes with the birds.
    • It is not polite to impose on other campers when they are eating – take the hint and return to their family at mealtime.  Mind you, some adults don’t seem to have the mastered these rules as yet either.

At the beach:

  • Adults, keep alert. Make sure you are sober to be able to react should something occur.
  • Swim only within the designated swimming areas.
  • Obey all instructions from lifeguards.
  • Never let children in the water alone.
  • Have young children wear approved life jackets in and the around water. Exercise caution with flotation devises as the currents can take them quickly out to sea.
  • No diving head first. Go in feet first every time.
  • Pay close attention to children at all times, even in shallow water the wave action can cause a loss of footing.

Have a safe and enjoyable Carnival!
